Toddler Tuesday at Discovery Green + Good Dog

I really like Houston parks but it’s hard for me to stay long periods of time outdoors during summer. Usually during summer we have either indoors or splash pads play dates, like story time at The Houston Museum of Modern art.  I was looking for something fun to do because the weather forecast for this week was perfect to do something outdoors without melting and getting sweaty after 5 minutes like a regular Houston summer day.  I saw a Facebook post were Big Kids Small City announced that they were hosting a story time at discovery green; By the way You need to follow Big Kids Small City if you are not following them yet, it’s an amazing weekly guide of activities and events around Houston for kids.

I was really excited and started planing out day at the “City”. Yes you read correctly I had to planned my day because Mrs. Mia wakes up at 9-10am so it’s really hard for us to attend play dates because if I wake her up she would be in a grumpy bad mood all day, so most of the time we are soooo late to our play dates. But this time I really made an effort and we arrived at 10:15 at Discovery Green. I didn’t know what to expect because las time we went to a Discovery Green activity for Halloween was really bad organized, but thank God this time was different because I was by myself with Mia.

We arrived and they welcomed us with an inflatable ball, crown and crayons for the kids to color. They started at 10:30 signing songs, and then they read “The princess and the pony” they finished signing more songs and then Peppa pig appeared and they also had free pony rides, which we missed because Mia didn’t had the patience to wait in line.

They also have a book exchange, so you can bring a new or gently used book, and trade it for another one.

After story time we visited the temporary installation “Arcade” by color condition, Mia was so excited to see all the colors. They recently added a “Houston Strong”  piece which faces the George R. Brown Convention Center which is being used as a shelter after Harvey storm.  The installation will be up until November.

After Discovery Green we had lunch at “Good Dog” I had hear that they have the best hot dogs in Houston and that is a funky happy place for kids and they also have a pet friendly patio, and in effect it was that way, Mia loved all the dog art they have for sale on the walls, they have crayons and games so the kids can play, it’s a lay back ambient.

I had a delicious hot dog “Southern Comfort Dog” (homemade chow chow, bacon braised collards, house whole grain mustard and bacon) and Mia had  a “mini” corn dog.

And that was all for this City play date… We came back home and I was exhausted and of course Mia wasn’t because she rest all the way back lol

Some recommendations if you are planning to attend to Toddler Tuesday at discovery green:

  • Bring a book to exchange
  • Plan to get early not only because the parking can be an issue but to get a front spot at story time.
  • Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks.
  • Bring extra clothes and towel in case the kids get in the splash pad.
  • Plan to come with friends to take turns waiting in the activity lines or bring a stroller.
