This Dulcitos de leche are so flavorful, sweet and addicting. No matter how sweet they are you will want to grab a second one.
Dulcitos de leche are actually called Dulce de Leche in Guatemala, but I don’t want to cause any confusion because I know that for most people Dulce de Leche refers to a creamy caramel sauce. Dulcito de leche it’s a traditional Guatemalan candy, usually made for religious occasions, they are given as favors for baptisms and first communions.
You might be wondering if you haven’t hear about this treats, what it taste like? Well if you have been in Guatemala and tried canillitas de leche, it is similar, a lot more softer and not as sweet as the canillita. If you have never have a canillita de leche from Guatemala think as if it was marzipan but instead of almond flavor it taste like powdered milk
In Venezuela they have a similar treat called “Papitas de leche” the only difference is that they decor the treat with a clove in top. This is a super easy recipe you just need 3 ingredients, sweetened condensed milk, powdered sugar and powdered milk. I must say that there is also another Guatemalan recipe but it’s more elaborate, I really like this one, is yummy and easy.
In Guatemala they are usually made with candy or chocolate molds to form shapes like angels, lambs, etc. As easter is approaching I thought it would be fun to make “bunny tails” by just making a ball and then covering them with powdered milk.
They turned out so delicious with that powdered milk on top, that will be my new way of serving them for sure! Papitas de leche or Dulce de leche in Guatemala aren’t covered with powdered milk.
If you want to make shapes instead of balls, you can use cookie cutters o candy/chocolate molds.
Just sprinkle powdered sugar on the molds, remove excess and make the shape. Remove it by lifting on corner carefully with a spatula or a knife. It’s best if you let it rest for at least 5 minutes before you lift it.
If you are using cookie cutters, knead with a rolling pin the dough about 1/4inch on a surface with powdered sugar. If its too sticky add powdered sugar to your cutters before cutting. You can also stamp the dough, just sprinkle some powdered sugar on top of the dough to prevent sticking
After letting them dry for about an hour you can store them in and air tight container or place them in bags the to give them as favors or gifts.
